What's this map referring to by "safe" because for example while Japanese society is generally more conservative you're not likely to come across violence or unwarranted arrest of lgbtq+ people
The map should clearly state that it means safety from discrimination, not general safety.
For example:
In Brazil, it's somewhat likely to become the victim of violent crime, but unlikely it's because you're gay.
In Japan, it's likely you're not allowed to enter the families-only section of the hot spring resort, likely because you and your husband are both male.
In Brazil, no discrimination. Everyone gets robbed equally.
The only thing in your pants they care about is your wallet #pridemonth
Also in Japan you are not allowed to enter most night clubs if you are a foreigner.
Brazil has consecutively topped the index of most trans people killed Really sad, even though S?o Paulo has the largest LGBTQ parade in the world
i was going to say. alot of the country are very safe to travel in but are suspiciously orange or red
Japan also declared lgbt people as mentally ill not too long ago, so don’t expect their views of them to improve. But it’s also one of the most xenophobic societies in existence so no surprise they also hate the big gay
Also USA and India on the same level? What a stupid map.
USA bad. Don’t you know that?
The US has areas of the country which are incredibly hostile to lgbt which is probably what brings it down.
How imagine the areas in India…
I mean idk. India has pretty good laws protecting lgbtq+ rights
What are you talking about
Nobody denies the USA has issues. However, homosexuality was only decriminalized in India in 2009, then criminalized again in 2013 and then decriminalized again in 2018.
From that factoid alone, it should be pretty clear there is a bit of a difference between the US and India.
You think that, but its not really fair on an international level.
Our, "hostility" is considerably more tame than what goes down in other nations.
And almost all of it doesn't apply to international tourists.
The biggest problem I can think of is the bathroom laws.
PS: Im queer in a red state.
"while Thailand is viewed as a tourist haven for same-sex couples, the reality for locals is that the law, and often public sentiment, is not so liberal."
As other commenters have said, it seems like this map is focused on laws/regulations/institutional discrimination. Thailand is currently in the process of legalizing same-sex marriage.
Many red states are instituting bills preventing trans people from accessing public bathrooms, and banning life-saving medication for trans kids. How have you not heard of this?
I’ve heard of it. Just don’t think it’s oppression. Kids shouldn’t transition until they’re adults. They can access public bathrooms as long as they’re neutral or a bathroom that corresponds to their biological sex.
Just because you agree with it, doesn't mean it's not oppression. At least be honest.
I didn’t realize your opinion on other people’s lives and bodies mattered over their own opinion.

Well, some doctors are activists and in some cases talk people into doing procedures that are irreversible. And there’s a few cases of this. Like Chloe Cole or Prisha Mosley to name a few.
Yeah… it’d be pretty obvious… dude with a shaved face wearing a wig, obvious bone structure just struttin’ on in the women’s bathroom.

Yeah, it's a misuse of the word safe. Japan is not a violent place, and crime rates are really low, so you'll be very safe. But you will also be openly discriminated against if you are not straight or ethnically Japanese. They're still a solid half century behind in a lot of basic equality aspects. But you're very unlikely to ever be unsafe, just denied entry to some places.

Also Philippines, its conservative and religious yet acceptance of LGBTQ is prent
Much more than lets say the US or other more developped countries

Homophobic Polar Bears
Honestly, this map looks more like a map of best and worst places for LBGT+ people to live in rather than to travel. In many of the red and orange countries, queer tourists will get away with holding hands and even sometimes booking a hotel room together etc, with barely any risk of violence (Japan being the prime example of course). On the other hand, they are indeed countries with no gay marriage, no legal protection or even straight illegality.
I was in Guatemala earlier this month which is dark red on this map. There were two gay couples at the hostel I stayed at. It felt like they were completely and entirely safe. Locals interacted with them like they would anyone else
Yes, Turkey is also completely fine if you’re staying in the regular touristic places.
The map really is quite odd in that way, because in many countries there is also a big difference in how outsiders are treated versus natives.
Lots of countries with very rigid cultural expectations that mostly don't apply to tourist because they consider them outsiders and will gladly welcome them to their country.
China too. You'll probably get a lot of weird looks, but I ain't nobody gonna do anything about it.
I think it's true to some extent. In particular, Spain is a region famous for being quite tolerant of minorities, including lgbtq.
Spain is known for being often absurdly racist
It is compared to the rest of Europe lol
Except you can still run into groups of adolescent machomen seeking trouble there
All rankings are putting Poland on a dead end
Except social acceptance rankings, where Poland is better than majority of eastern block countries.
West Poland is pretty safe, but East poland is VERY Homophobic.

Just don't suck dick in public and you are good to go in every part of Poland.
It's a very Catholic country.

Also Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the negative, while Thailand is just neutral? Those countries have LGBT culture for ever and being attacked or spit on etc. Is less likely than in London, Berlin and so on for sure.
Regarding Canada: I once saw a shirt in the window of a shop in Quebec that said “In Canada, we don’t care who you marry, as long as you both watch hockey”.
It might get a bit heated if one of the couple is a Leafs fan and the other a Habs fan haha
And if you don't watch hockey then you absolutely will be discriminated against.
This is why my country (Canada) has been looking to deport me for years. I'm not a fan of hockey and never have been.
Not as far as Cambodia is concerned. LGBT travelers will never have issues, and there are gay venues in both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Only traveling to remote, rural locations may yield stares, but nothing remotely malicious. Although there's a constitutional ban on marriage, about 60% of people here are in favor of it. This is a case where the government policies are old, and do not necessarily reflect the sentiment of the people.

Is there somewhere an explanation on how they rated these countries? Because I dont quite understand how Vatican City is considered so severly unsafe?
It's cause the pope personally executes any gay person enrering the Vatican
I had a schoolmate who went to a Seminary at the Vatican to train as a priest in the 1980's. He said 90% of the trainee priests were openly gay. He left after 5 years because he "discovered breasts".
you should look up their track record with children!
This looks more of a map about legal rights for LGBTQ people living here, not so much safety for travelers.
Sure, in less tolerant countries there might on average be more verbal or physical attacks, but it would make more sense to measure this directly if the purpose is for LGBTQ travelers
I think this has more to do with the laws in place than anything else, also religion plays a part, the most vocal people’s opinions on the matter, and the lack of proper education on the matter due to the previous reasons. Overall the map seems pretty accurate to me. Just a little surprised by India, but I don’t much about what laws they have passed in recent years.
India does not follow Sharia laws per se. Indian constitution grants special autonomy to religious minorities which allows them to set up their own religious laws. This has enabled the Muslim minority to essentially set up sharia ruled pockets in different parts of the country.
The gay marriage has not been legalised yet because of the definition of marriage in the Indian constitution, which can only be changed via constitutional amendment, a very lengthy and politically costly procedure. Gay marriages are, however, decriminalised and are possible under the special marriage provisions of the constitution.
Seriously, how can it be the same color as Pakistan which has legal capital punishment for homosexuality
And again this stupid map, is Ukraine better than Poland? Nah, wrong map
Well, if you usually get shelled here not because you are LGBTQ...

Country in War safer for travel than Poland. Interesting map
I think this is exaggeration, Turkey is not the same level as some of those muslim countries, it is much safer.
This might be the case for Istanbul and Izmir, but don't try and venture into Erdoganistan with your s/s partner
So the Philippines, the "gayest country" in Asia, is in red? LOL whoever made this map has never been to the Philippines.
Based on the map notes, it's more to do with legal rights and protections than Vibes, hence why it rates low.
Dumb index. Safety while traveling depends much more on what you do than who you are. If you don't engage in any PDA and don't wear pride stuff the middle east is just fine. On the other hand kissing in public and such is frowned upon for all people in a lot of places.
Also why would marriage laws be relevant at all to travel safety??
Taiwan is accurate. Same-sex marriage is legal. Nobody cares what your sexual orientation is.
Map is some serious BS, India is among the safest in all of Asia? You are perfectly safe in all the East Asian countries (China, Japan, Korea) as LGBTQ.
Inaccurate. Russia is LGBTQ friendly. Signs of affection in public are just heavily discouraged. Likewise for most middle eastern countries. In Latin America, even if the country's policies and political leaders are pro-LGBTQ, you're literally a walking target. Most especially in the slums of Mexico, Central America, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador. In South Africa, the closer you are to neighboring countries the risk is higher. In China and South Korea, you're a walking disease.
I think the US map should be state based. I’m a straight white male, but I have zero desire to travel to the Deep South (Alabama, Mississippi, etc) because I don’t trust the yokel police to not pull a My Cousin Vinny on me during a road trip.
