Pretty uneventful, judging from my friends’ lives. They live just like other Vietnamese, face the same problems, do the same things. Like Vietnamese, their life is affected by how much money they or their family have.
To give an example of a Hoa in Vietnam. Meet ?ng Cao Th?ng.

In general, what is it like to be a Chinese in Vietnam?
Depends on your money, status and personal network, you live pretty much just like any other Vietnamese person in the same circumstance as you.

It is very easy for aChinese immigrant in Vietnam to become local person:
1/ accept the VN citizenship and follow HaNoi laws
2/ transcribe his or her name into Viet Quocngu letters: his or her name is always Chinese in Han characters but pronounced in Viet way
Viets and Chinese are cousins in language and culture, there is not discrimination, and better no more wars for territories in future

living in Vietnam as a Chinese-Vietnamese would differ widely from different Vietnamese generations. the older generation would probably just ignore you, but will treat you equally like an average human being. the middle-aged generation would be interested in you, and would like to learn more about you. however, most of them wouldn't have much opinion about you. the younger generation would admire you, some of the factors to this is that you, a Chinese-Vietnamese, have East Asian blood. additionally, they would tend to joke around with you but would also be polite.

I’m Chinese Vietnamese but not a Hoa (Chinese from southern China).
My parents came to HCMC , Vietnam from northern China (Henan , Chengdu) in 1986. And I was born in 1991. I can speak both Vietnamese and Mandarin Chinese.
I can say I’ve never been experienced racism or discrimination for 28 years of my life.

First , Overall ,Vietnamese never discriminate against Chinese , Second If you want know clearly about this question , You need to divide Chinese into 3 groups:

I have it on good authority that there is no real enmity between the Chinese and Vietnamese. Many may not realise that many of the Vietnamese people as with Koreans, Japanese, Thais, Cambodians, Burmese and Laotians have roots from China.
That some Vietnamese people use the friction between the Chinese and Vietnamese governments as an excuse to cause rioting and destroying factories and places of production owned by foreigners must be the most unthinking and stupid acts of all.

You will be treated the same just like everyone else. It's very hard to tell a Chinese Vietnamese among pure Vietnamese anyways. My aunt is Chinese and her family follows Vietnamese customs and traditions even though sometimes they speak Chinese at home. I think it's also due to the fact that the culture of the two countries are not much different so Chinese Vietnamese can easily blend their traditions with Vietnamese'.
Recently there has been ongoing tension between Vietnam and China over border dispute, but I think most Vietnamese has hatred towards the Chinese and party, not the Chinese people themselves.Therefore, Chinese Vietnamese are pretty non-discriminated in Vietnam.
你會(huì)跟其他人一樣，受到同等的對(duì)待。我們很難從越南人中分辨出華裔越南人。我阿姨是中國(guó)人，她的家人遵循越南的習(xí)俗和傳統(tǒng)，只是有時(shí)候會(huì)在家里說中文。我認(rèn)為這也是因?yàn)閮蓢?guó)的文化沒有太大不同，所以華裔越南人可以很容易地將他們的傳統(tǒng)與越南的傳統(tǒng)融合在一起，而不會(huì)像西方國(guó)家那樣被注意到。

I don't know what to say but yet they still look at us half of their eyes in general. There are a few of bad stereotypes formed in their minds such as:

They must be careful with us because we would use any chance to cheat, fraud ...
Some jokes that I found pretty racism, especially the small eyes. Do I need to tell that nearly 8 in 10 Asian have small eyes?
They treat us like a betrayal
我們肯定很擅長(zhǎng)數(shù)學(xué)或科學(xué)學(xué)科。
他們必須提防我們，因?yàn)槲覀儠?huì)利用任何機(jī)會(huì)作弊、騙人……
我覺得有些笑話帶有濃厚的種族主義色彩，尤其是小眼睛。需不需要由我來告訴你，近80%的亞洲人都有一對(duì)小眼睛嗎？
他們把我們當(dāng)成叛徒。

Is it hard being Chinese Vietnamese in modern day Vietnam today?
在今天的越南，華裔越南人的境遇很艱難嗎？
But according to some Chinese Vietnamese in southern Vietnam I know, they did have some issues of their own:
我認(rèn)為現(xiàn)代越南的華裔越南人和普通越南人并沒有太多不同支出。我有一個(gè)朋友是華裔越南人，2004-2009年期間他是我的同學(xué)。我起初并不知道他是華裔越南人，直到他有一次必須回中國(guó)一周，因?yàn)樗淖谧迨最I(lǐng)去世了。他和我上了同一所大學(xué)，他和我一樣在大企業(yè)做類似的工作，他娶了一位越南女孩。在我看來，他一點(diǎn)也不擔(dān)心自己的中國(guó)血統(tǒng)。
但據(jù)我認(rèn)識(shí)的越南南部的一些華裔越南人說，他們確實(shí)有一些自己的問題：
They are pressured to marry Chinese Vietnamese by their family
There are rumour that Chinese Vietnamese can’t work for the government, which is not true because my friend’s parents are member of Vietnamese Co unist Party and were mid level officers of precint level. Maybe they can’t become top level, but I am not sure about that.
