I am one of those people.
I was told Hussein made the health care system better though
I have no worries, why...? Because I am responsible, fully insured and have purposely saved $$$ to cover out of pocket. Really isn't that hard, just have to be an adult and not a child who wants with out working for it.
If you didn't get an ambulance and lived to take a survey, you didn't need an ambulance.
Reminds of the stories of tourists and exchange students absolutely panicking when bystanders try to call an ambulance in the UK (and presumably the EU).
Actually when I was in nursing school, a classmate of mine’s son burnt himself in a kitchen fire. The ambulance arrived and wouldn’t take him because they questioned if he could afford the ride. They lived in section 8 housing. Ambulances are often private companies.
I fell off scaffolding on a work site and shattered my heel, then chose to drive myself to urgent care so I could avoid ambulance and ER fees.

I’m not exaggerating when I tell you it’s cheaper for me to fly Business to where my parents live in Europe and get treated there, than to take an ambulance from my apartment to the hospital (4 blocks away) in NYC.
It's also proper etiquette to 1st call their Health insurer and ask them if they'd prefer the patient die or be taken by ambulance for help
Agree . Don't have the money for that.
I got into a motorcycle accident on the freeway a few years ago. I was bloody but nothing broken so I declined first responder service. They have you sign a paper to document your refusal. Then they still sent me a bill for $500

·Hey, true story.
It cost me ~$6,000 to ride an ambulance 3.4 miles from my workplace.
It took them nearly 20 minutes to get to me after I called. The fire department was 1.2 miles away. A 3 minute drive.
I could have called uber for $50 and been there faster.

I made sure to tip well.
Do you know how much one is. If its not life threatening then why blow $2k on a crappy ride. I had a bleeding ulcer but no way was I going to spend $2k to go less than a mile to a hospital.

Ahh yes! I remember having heart problems and when the urgent care said I needed an ambulance across town to Georgetown I looked at them like there were crazy and scooted over on my ebike. I’d rather die than go into debt to an ambulance company for an Uber across town

Don’t have this problem in the U.K. However they are taking a long time to get to patients. Personally in the U.K. as long as I’m not bleeding or with a limb hanging off I’d get an Uber to the hospital.
Used to be an EMT - worked on an ambulance for several years
I got cut off in traffic one day in my car and I kept thinking, if I got severely injured, I'd have to refuse transport because dying felt like less of a burden to my Wife than the cost of the ride and hospital stay

Just call them and Uber, no?
Isn't that what hospitals were complaining about when Uber started?

Call an Uber if you're not bleeding, a yellow cab if you are. It'll be $10,000 cheaper
The ambulance bill alone will kill them, let alone hospital costs.

And if you speak to EMT's they'll tell you how many people exploit the system with no real need and no intention of paying, which drives up the cost and limits availability for legitimate emergencies.
Friendly reminder that the US Healthcare system is unironically the most fascist out of 1st world countries. The government and Healthcare companies collude to make costs higher.
