Who is we? Who is they? Maybe the wording should go something like this. “The US has a massive trade imbalance with Australia in favour of the US, so why did that idiot Trump impose a 10% tariff on everything (that American consumers have to pay), including beef exports to the US from Australia.”
Now every US hamburger will be a fatty, feedlot mess without the lean, clean grass fed beef from Australia added in to make it edible. Unless US consumers pay the 10% extra to cover the added tariff.
The filthy, fatty, hormone and antibiotic laden beef processed in the US from who knows where, will continue to be denied entry into Australia unless documented evidence is provided regarding its source and with applicable disease checks completed, such as foot and mouth disease and mad cow disease.
Maybe Australia should now cancel all those domestic aircraft orders and defence orders regarding fighters and submarines. Trade with Australia would then no longer be out of balance. Europe is more than willing to take the billion dollar orders instead. Australia has made no retaliatory tariffs at all. China, however is more than willing to buy everything it can, without any tariffs. Good luck America, the only thing great is the huge stinky pile deposited by your POTUS.
You REALLY should look into grass fed beef here in Ohio. Heinens supermarkets source their house brand locally. For me, the son of a butcher, I find it too dry and tough, but a lot of people do not want corn fattened beef. Try it.
Of course there are some US producers that have high quality, but they are aimed at boutique markets with high prices. Why the US meat processors refuse to document their product for export markets is beyond me. Maybe it would cost a dollar more? The Wagyu beef from Australia is world class and gets very high prices. Estimated value of Wagyu boxed production for 2023 of AUD $2.0 billion exported to 40 countries. In 2023, Australian beef and veal exports reached a record value of $14.7 billion. This figure represented a 12.3% increase from the previous year. The United States was the largest destination market for Australian beef and veal, worth $3.3 billion, followed by China at $2.2 billion and Japan at $2 billion. China is now the major buyer after the insulting 10% tariff to Australia, previously one of the staunchest supporters of the US. Talk about Trump shooting every American in the foot with these tariffs. But that is exactly what Trump wanted, the population of the USA to suffer as payback for voting him out as POTUS. They are even idiotically cheering the POS on for doing this.
The United States has a surplus with 111 countries in 2024. As far as I can tell, we added tariffs on trade with all of them. Maybe the United States is punished them for allowing the United States to take advantage of them?
Only an idiot would equate a trade imbalance as taking advantage. I know Trump is behaving idiotically, but are you also an idiot? Australia has a trade imbalance in favour of the US, yet Trump still forced a 10% tariff that Americans will have to pay on anything from Australia. A poor African country selling its produce at a very low price, benefited the US. The fact that the people are very poor and cannot afford to buy a lot of US stuff does not mean they are taking advantage of the US. Placing a high tariff on their produce just means that the US consumers now have to pay much more to buy their own farm produce. And every citizen of that poor country will now suffer from it.
Actually, as tariffs are paid by the importer in the United States, I’m half convinced that the reason for them (as was the case for similar during Trump’s first term) is simple extortion: either be forced to raise prices — possibly going out of business — or “donate” to Trump or his party and receive an exception.

Importers have nothing to do with it. They either pay the tariff or have the goods confiscated. The country of origin still has the tariff applied. No amount of importer bribery would have any effect on that because importers usually deal with multiple countries. Trump is going to cause a huge spike in inflation, and the Reserve Bank will act by raising interest rates. That will benefit the rich and punish the poor and middle class. This is payback for them voting him out the first time.
If no ther countries put tariffs on each other
the US will become stranded and very expensive.
everyone retaliates US tariffs US becomes untraceable both ways…..
other countries pick up the surplus and reshape.
over time there’s no more in place a mechanism to furnish the US.
Rest of world becomes easier, I won’t say cheaper….

Yes, the USA trade with Australia is all in America's favour.
If Trump applied his tariff formula to Australia, the tariff rate would be a MINUS percentage.
But he is mad that Australia bans U.S. beef from Australia.
We do that because we don't have foot and mouth disease or mad cow disease in Australia but the USA still gets occasional outbreaks. We take bio security VERY seriously in Australia.
(if you travel to Australia with ANY kind of food in your bag, declare it on your arrival card. If it's declared but not allowed, we take the offending items off you and send you on your way. If you don't declare and you have offending food items, you get a $2600 fine, payable before you leave the airport - I kid you not!)
In addition, the U.S. allows the use of growth hormones and antibiotics in cattle.
Australia banned those in our farm animals in the 1980s.
So US beef does not meet our very high food standards.
Trump is annoyed, so applies a tariff on Australia.
The Australian ban on American beef imports was lifted in 2019.
Australia offered to certify US beef imports, subject to biosecurity and food safety assessments, that would allow the US to export beef to Australia from cattle born and raised in the US
The US beef industry chose to not progress with this pathway unless it also included cattle born and raised in Mexico and Canada and only processed in the US.
The Australian government response was that beef from these countries would need to undergo seperate biosecurity and food safety assessments, as the foot and mouth, mad cow disease and other biosecurity risks are different in those countries, and that the US exporters would need to identify the source country and seperate these from US grown beef to avoid cross contamination.
The US beef industry chose not to go down this path because of the difficulty of compliance on their end.
So, it is the US beef industry that has stood in the way of exporting to Australia, not the other way around.
Around 3/4 of the beef produced in Australia is exported, so it is unlikely that there is much of a market for US beef in Australia anyway.
Indeed. When you buy a hamburger in the USA, the beef patty could have meat from many different countries in it.
This is unacceptable to the Australian authorities, who want to know the provenance of EVERY beast imported to this country.
I have never, and will never eat hamburgers in the US. At this stage I won’t even go to the US.
No, I have 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren in the USA and I told them 2 years ago that I would never come back there, as I didn’t trust the government. They didn't understand at the time, but they do now.
Last might was a story about an Australian MMA Coach who was illegally detained and subsequently deported. These are not just imaginary stories.
While your points are all valid and logical, I think you give Trump too much credit by believing he has reasons behind his actions. He doesn’t think past one move. He puts out tariffs hoping others will bow down and grovel at his feet. There is nothing deeper.
I concur. If he had cogent thoughts behind his actions he wouldn’t have tariffed a bunch of penguins.
Trump was talking tariffs (in place of income taxes) back in the 1980s.
Then when he was running for office the first time, he was looking for a trigger issue and settled on "bad China"
He asked Jared to find him an advisor who knew about China and Kushner looked at Amazon book titles and saw one on China by Peter Navarro. In that book Navarro espoused tariffs on China and referred constantly to an expert Ron Vara.
So Navarro got the job with Trump as a special adviser on the economy.
The curious thing is that Ron Vara is victitious - he does not exist. His name is an anagram of Navarro, and everything in the book is Navarro without any backup expert.
So Trump does have long range plans. And now with a compliant Congress he is implementing them.
It's partly that.
At his core, Trump feels inferior and so he over compensates.
He was laughed at to his face in the UN and behind his back at other meetings of world leaders (although often caught on camera).
American big business has never really accepted him as “one of them” either. He's always been seen as a carpet bagger.
He is openly mocked in the media.
He acts as if he is oblivious to all this, but he knows.
He built his own country clubs so that he didn't have to apply (and possibly be denied) membership and he gets to decide who is a member of his clubs.
He is absolutely giddy that the richest man in the world wants to be his friend and doesn't miss a chance to show off his bromance (although Musk is not as enamoured of Trump, but he does like the power it gives him)
The tarrifs, cutting foreign aid, telling the US’s closest allies that the US won't defend them, mass sackings of public servants, banning main stream media - these are all just Trump getting back at all those “mean girls”.
You are right. He said afterwards that the tariffs were negotiable providing the countries offered him things that he wants ie raw minerals, gold, precious gems.

Completely agree. The talk about unfair trade practices and manufacturing in the US is just window dressing a big ego trip.
The current thinking is that any place with an Internet domain name got slapped with a tariff, which is why Heard and Mcdonald Islands with only penguins gets a 10% tariff, as does Norfolk Island, but not Philip Island next to it.
Diego Garcia, which is a British dependency, but only inhabited by US military also gets a 10% tariff and poor old Madagascar, whose only export to the US is vanilla has 35% tariff. Apparently the seppos love their vanilla coffee, so with the price of coffee AND vanilla going up it won't be much fun for them.
The Australian tariff situation is full of confusion.
First of all many American government comments are about trade surpluses as the basis for tariffs in which case Australia is on the positive side as Australia virtually imports twice what we export to USA. So why is Australia being penalised?
Second we are told that beef is the problem and the reason for the tariffs. Given that Australian beef is generally better quality and we have a surplus. It seems Americans want it for that reason particularly McDonalds for their and DJT’s hamburgers. However we do not need beef from the USA as we have plenty of our own so why do we have to import USA beef when we already have a trade surplus with the USA. I am also informed that it is also subsidised and would be ‘competitive’ with Australian non subsidised beef assuming Australians would buy it.
Australia is fortunate in being an island and so has managed to avoid importing many of the diseases that poison food or compromise its food safety and quality. Australia also has a regime of keeping food protected from chemicals unlike the USA. I thought that was why DJT appointed Robert Kennedy to remove the various things that make American food products crap. Maybe if he is successful the USA will produce food that is edible and of a quality they can sell overseas to places like Australia. Meanwhile why should we import compromised food by our standards just because Americans are content to eat rubbish and suffer the consequences to their health.
Too many American politicians or news commentators imbued with the idea that the USA is the greatest and everyone else is wrong are spewing inaccurate information. The Australian beef situation is a good example as is the problem with American built cars and Utes like the Ford 250 being suitable for small European roads. Even the quality is an issue. e.g. Jeep does not have a good reputation in Australia for quality and sales are going backwards.
The fact is, Australian made food is as good as it comes and its quality alone means we will always find countries to buy it as premium food always has a market. We also export iron ore, uranium, coal and aluminium and any tariffs the USA imposes in us will just mean more trade with China, Japan, India and South Korea etc. So I big winner from all this will be China, they will increase trade with the people pissed off by trump and will increase their economy while the USA economy goes downhill. Better economy equals more money to spend on the military and arms and more money to spend on the nations China are already trying to bribe through the belt and road policies. In essence, the USA will weaken their position in trade, countries in the Middle like Australia will find other markets, admittedly with some pain in the transition, and China will be the biggest beneficiaries of this trade war. So trump is pissing off its trade partners while giving economic benefits to its enemies.
The “trade surplus” justification is just an excuse to cover the real agenda. The underlying agenda is money and in particular money for Trump.
There have been multiple excuses applied to justify tariffs, all applied inconsistently and often based on fantasy economics and even lies.
Drug importation. Very little drug traffic goes via Canada into the USA. Yet this was the partial excuse for applying tariffs. Generally drug trafficking is a cooperative law enforcement issue that is applied strenuously on both sides of the border. But Trump invented a Tariff to punish Canada for lax enforcement. This is a lie.
Trade imbalances. These are generally addressed via organic currency exchange rate changes. The USA could allow its dollar to due, but Trump will not allow that. Tariffs are not an appropriate way to adjust trade imbalances so it’s a USA problem.
Taxation. Trump was claiming that Tariffs could replace income tax. The math does not add up.
Reindustrialization of the USA. This is not going to happen unless US worker wages can be suppressed down to Chinese levels. Cheap goods will also become generally inaccessible.
Blow away the smoke. Underneath the real reason is money in Trump’s pocket via bribes.
Because the stupid twunt trump doesn't get that the aussies have very high bio security measures to protect their environment. He also doesn't understand that developed countries don't want beef that's been pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones. That's why many developed countries have banned the law quality, unfit for human consumption American beef.
President Trump says he loves tariffs. He says tariffs will boost the American economy and support the Federal Government.
He placed a 10% tariff on ALL goods coming into the US. It doesn’t matter if Australia buys more from the US than the US buys from Australia, he still imposed the 10% tariff.
He placed a higher tariff on countries which the US buys more goods from them than they buy from the US. These tariffs are what he’s calling reciprocal tariffs. Just today (9 Apr 2025) he placed a 125% tariff on goods coming from China.
All these tariffs will be paid by Americans who buy the goods. None will be paid by other countries.
Trumps tarrifs arr nothing to do with trade and everything to do with TAXATION. Americans HATE paying tax, Republicans especially. Instead of upsetting his supporters by putting up TAXES he claims low taxation status BUT introduces tarrifs (literally on everything, regardless on trade balances) to rake in a massive amount of money from the American people! Tarrifs are a sales TAX on American consumers because they come out of Americans pockets at the tills. They don't result in new American manufacturing jobs, they don't make America great again. They raise money for the federal government, they are a BACKDOOR TAX.
